About D-Day Museum

No where is the courage of Britain's fighting men and women more evocatively displayed than in the D-Day Museum at Southsea. Here under one roof is a unique celebration of the spirit of these men and our American and Canadian allies, who together sailed from Portsmouth to carry out one of the most daring invasions in history.

The invasion of Normandy (Operation Overlord), took place on the 6th June 1944, its huge success led to the beginning of the end of World War II, ridding us of tyranny and the eventual liberation of Europe.

The centrepiece of the museum is the extraordinary "Overlord Embroidery", a magnificent work commissioned by Lord Dulverton of Batsford (1915-1992) as a tribute to the sacrifice of life, and the men and women who played their part in Operation Overlord.

The Overlord Embroidery is a modern counterpart of the famous Bayeaux Tapestry, it was designed by artist Sandra Lawrence and took five years in the making. It is singularly dramatic, evocative of the fighting spirit and stirring deeds of peoples banded together
with only one aim - Victory.

The Embroidery is 272 feet long and as you look at it you cannot fail but be moved by the richness of its strong portrayal of the happenings of D-Day. Your journey along it is accompanied by a multi-language commentary bringing the events to life.

Visitors to the museum can also see a film show with unique footage of the era and historical archive material, providing an equally memorable experience.

The D-Day Museum can be found close to Southsea Castle on Clarence Esplanade, Southsea. It has educational facilities for children and offers people of all ages an inspiring and informative visit.
